2 – Those You’ve Known
Performers: Jonathan Groff, John Gallagher, Jr., Lea Michele
As the climax of this 2007 Tony Award winning musical Spring Awakening, this number highlights the event in which a young man contemplates taking his own life after suffering the death of his best friend and learning of the death of his lover. However, he is visited by the ghostly spirits of them as they sway him away from his suicidal thoughts and offer him comfort and support, singing “those you’ve known and lost still walk behind you,” and that his strife is only temporary. They also advise him to live the rest of his life for not just himself but also those who have unfairly and unjustly passed before him. This number composed by Duncan Sheik is a comfort to those who have lost a loved one or others that are contemplating the same, offering a beacon of hope that breaks through the darkness and shadows of the strife that binds them to their past.
