Godspell originally came out in the off and on Broadway world in 1971, however, I went to see the Revival featuring Corbin Bleu last year and could not help but to include this number in the list of the most touching Broadway musical numbers of the 21st century. In this scene, Jesus finishes the last supper with his disciples and is saying goodbye to all of them as he knows what must come next; his crucifixion. This moment stirs you to stand by your friends when one of them leaves to sacrifice themselves for an event you’ve always known was to come, such as your close friend or neighbor moving away to another city. This beautifully written piece is composed by Stephen Schwartz. I remember him saying in an interview, “I didn’t want this musical to be about religion or anything religious. I intended for this musical to teach people to be good people.”
