This number from Rent, and really the rest of the entire musical, is composed and arranged by Jonathan Larson and highlights the gathering of a diverse community coming together to mourn and weep the death of a common friend of their community at his funeral. This song reminds us that our time here is limited, and that we should make the best of it, get to know the greatest of people in the world, and to remain a true friend or loyal lover to those who’ve been the same to you. It also emphasizes how the death of a life can bring a family and community who’ve been separated back together, remembering the times spent together, and re-strengthening the bond that could never be broken. The above video clip is taken from the film version of the musical featuring all but two of the original Broadway cast members. Beautifully and soulfully composed for a mournful event, Jonathan Larson knew how to capture and highlight the very core values of a daily life before his death shortly before Rent went on to Broadway.
