5 – I Am the One (Reprise)

The thing I like about this musical is how open to interpretation the story is, and this number from Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s Next to Normal expresses the love between family members, past and present. In this scene, a clinically and mentally unstable mother leaves her husband at the climax of this story to seek better treatment away from her problems (whether it be temporary or permanent is left for the audience to interpret), and her husband sings out in lamentation about how he’s always been the one to have helped her through all her problems, through the death of their infant son and through raising a daughter who the mother neglects at times. He laments after she leaves, singing, “I am the one who loved you, I am the one who stayed, I am the one and you walked away.” As he sings this, he possibly understands his wife’s situation the clearest he’s ever in their lifetime together, and we are left with a glimmer of light left for this family. This video clip is of the off-Broadway production before premiering on Broadway shortly after, before Brian d’Arcy James had given up his role to J. Robert Spencer to play the lead.
