This number from the 2008 Broadway musical In the Heights accentuates the mourning of a Hispanic community in upper Manhattan for the death of Abuela Claudia, the community’s matriarch who had always longed to return to the Dominican Republic, but never made it back in time due to her health and old age. They sing “alabanza,” praise to all things in this world, praise to lift the soul of Abuela Claudia to God, thanking them for the great blessing he bestowed upon them having given them Claudia to watch over the community. This is a mourning song of praise and love for a loved one who cherished everything life, who taught the values of life to the less knowledgeable youngsters of modern America. Lin-Manuel Miranda magnificently composed and arranged this song for an absolutely appropriate moment, a song inside all of us that we all can sing for ourselves to another whom we love dearly.
