Veteran film and TV producer John Calley died Tuesday at age 81. “John was unique,” his friend Mike Nichols said. “As a studio head he was unfailingly supportive and didn’t try to do the filmmaker’s job. When he believed in someone he trusted and supported him and when very rarely he had a suggestion it was usually a life saver. In fact that’s what he was: a life saver.” He began his career in the 1950s by producing such classic shows as Mr. Ed. From there, Calley would produce classic films such as The Exorcist(1973), Superman(1978), The Remains of the Day(1993) and Closer(2004). He served as head of production, president and vice chairman of Warner Bros. from 1968-1981. In 2009, Calley was he was awarded filmdom’s highest honor when he received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He was married to actress Meg Tilly from 1995-2002.
