‘Lie to Me’ Recap: "Beyond Belief"

Then then things get sinister as Cal returns home and finds an SRP brochure lying in plain view on the kitchen table. Cal yells for Emily, who was showering, and asks her where the brochure came from and she says she doesn't know. Cal rushes her to the office for safety, where he and Gillian question Jane. But now, Cal is pissed off and even more determined to nail Jack.

Cal goes back to the Lightman Group to question Jane and he finds out some dark and nasty stuff about Jack. Jane had been with Jack in the beginning when he started SPR. It started out good she said, but somewhere along the line Jack changed. "It was the money," says Cal, and Jane nods yes. Not only that, when Jack appointed himself the leader, Jane's ex-boyfriend Martin decided to leave the group. He died in a suspicious fire shortly thereafter. Jack tells Jane, "Martin brought it upon himself." Cal notices her shame and asks her if she, like Carol, also had attempted suicide. Jane's look tells him yes.

Armed with this information and guessing Carol was a past mistress of Jack's, Gillian and Cal head back to the SRP. Jack is in the middle of another speech and they can't find Carol anywhere. Cal sees that Jack knows she's missing too, and asks him about Danielle. He tries to be evasive but his body language gives him away. He knows Danielle very well.

Getting back to Danielle, Cal and Gillian get her to admit that she had been a SRP member who had daily sex with Jack for a year. Guilt and shame drove her away, but she couldn't get her mom to go with her.

Eli and Ria have been busy "digging for dirt" on Jack, and they've found a buried treasure! Jack is really Carl Weatherly, a scumbag who left Canada 15 years ago to avoid a manslaughter charge -- and even worse, he abandoned a wife and child. Then Ria shows Cal an Eli-built computer model of Jack's face. Carl/Jack has had a lot of plastic surgery, which resulted in the lack of muscle movement that made it so difficult to read his expressions.

When Cal and Gillian return to SRP, yet again Jack is in actor mode speaking grandly before an audience. Cal interrupts his little moment, and his deceptive life, by introducing Sandy and Liz, his wife and daughter that he'd abandoned so long ago. Stunned, Jack hurries offstage with Cal, Gillian, Sandy, and Liz right on his heels. He is trying to gain the upper hand, but no one, especially his wife and daughter, will have any of it. Then Jack tells Cal that "I'll take care of his family - and Cal should take care of his" in a menacing manner.

A worried Cal races back home. There he finds Emily studying with Liam, and brusquely tells them to go to his offices and stay there. Outside his house, Cal finds a man sitting in car outside - texting Jack. He picks up a tire iron, smashes the car's window, and tells the terrified man to tell Jack it's over.

Eli and Ria have found even more interesting stuff (and plenty of evidence) in a storage unit Jack had rented out in his old name. Cal arrives to see Jack freaking out and screaming, "Where are my files?" Cal tells Jack police confiscated everything and that Carol has turned up alive and well in Arizona. Jack gets arrested.

Cal goes home to Emily and Liam, who are studying again. They are justly apprehensive when Cal pulls up a chair, but Cal tells them he's just a guy having a hard time seeing his daughter grow up. He lets Liam stay to study and heads back to work. There he finds that Gillian has facilitated a reunion between Carol and Danielle.
