'Bones' Recap: Season 6, Episode 5 - 'The Bones That Weren't'

Booth is in the hospital with Hannah. She was shot in the leg. She tells Booth that she is fine and he needs to not worry. Booth says she should have taken him with her but she says she wouldn’t have gotten her story if she had. He asks her if she saw who shot her. She says that the pulled a .38 slug out of her which is a police bullet caliber and at the time she was shot she was talking to a drug dealer who was telling her about a cop who was pushing drugs in his neighborhood.

Brennan comes into the room saying that she has looked at Hannah’s x-rays. Hannah says the doctors told her she was fine and could leave the next day. Brennan says one of Hannah’s tendons has caused a bone to fracture and pulled out a bone shard that if pulled out anymore would have severed Hannah’s femoral artery and she would have died. Hannah states that Brennan just saved her life. Booth thanks her, they have an intense stare and Brennan leaves to talk to the Chief of Surgery.

Hodgins has been examining Russell’s screwdriver but he says it is unlikely that they will find the fungus on it after six months, he goes to investigate the other cases of the bone-eating fungus and there connection to Pearson’s murder.

At the FBI Building, Sweets runs into Booth and Brennan on their way to interrogate Russell. Sweets tells Booth he should be with Hannah. But Brennan has told Booth that the operation on Hannah’s leg will be routine and says he’s fine. Sweets disagrees and says he has had a scare and is obviously shaken but Brennan says that they persevere through life-threatening scares all the time.

In the interrogation room, Booth mentions that Russell has been charged with theft and threatening someone with the screwdriver, the threatening charges were dropped and Russell said he was charged with theft because he stole food to eat. Russell says that Robert came to the park broke and that he showed him some moves. Brennan says that soon Pearson was making more money than Russell and Booth thinks that mad Russell mad. Russell says he and Robert were friends. Booth asks why Russell didn’t report him missing. Russell tells them that people come and go when they perform on the streets. Russell thinks they have already assumed he was guilty and lawyers up.

We join Hodgins and Arastoo digging through a dumpster in the park looking for the fungus. They find it in the trash bags from the park maintenance worker. The pair also sees him spearing trash and they believe they have found the murder weapon.

At the lab, Brennan and Cam have solved the how, what and when of the case but they have no evidence tying the murder weapon to who killed Pearson. Brennan tries thinking like Booth and discerns that whoever killed him chased him threw the park. Cam suggests that one of the people Pearson tried to pickpocket might have chased him. Brennan says that the robbery victim would have grabbed the spear, chased Pearson, stabbed him, pushed him onto the foundation and then slit the plastic sheet and covered him. Cam says they already checked the slit for fingerprints and found nothing. Brennan says they looked in the wrong place on the sheet.

In a demonstration Brennan asks Hodgins to play dead, she shows that the murderer leaned on one hand while cutting the plastic with the other and then shoves Hodgins in the hole in the sheet. Brennan shows that the murder lefts a palm print on the sheet. Cam asks how they are going to get a palm print off a sheet that has been incased in concrete. Hodgins pops out of the hole saying he needs some gold.

Back at the hospital, Hannah asks Booth about his case. He says he will catch whoever killed Pearson and then he will catch whoever shot Hannah. Hannah bets him that she will find her shooter before Booth will. Booth tells her he thinks she should back off. Hannah is upset about it but Booth says she should chill until she is better and then they will catch the shooter together. Hannah appreciates Booth’s protectiveness.

At the lab, Hodgins is performing a vacuum metal deposition, in which gold will bind to the lipids left by the handprint. When the print appears, it is too small to be man’s hand.

At the FBI Building, Booth and Brennan have both Beverly, the park musician and Cynthia Rinaldi, the ballet teacher in custody. Booth gets Brennan to speculate as to who she thinks did it. Brennan says it was Rinaldi because she was strong enough and mad at Pearson. But Booth tells her that Beverly was Pearson’s pickpocket partner that he betrayed. Booth also said that Beverly probably killed Pearson because her attraction to him went south. They get prints off water glasses the two suspects’ use. Booth holds up a picture of the handprint on the plastic sheet and Beverly looks shocked and guilty and Booth says she is busted. Brennan says Beverly’s body language doesn’t prove she is guilty but Booth says it does.

At the hospital the next day, Hannah is writing her article when Brennan visits. Hannah asks where her gift is and Brennan and Hannah discuss the anthropological meaning behind giving gifts to sick people, which ends in Hannah talking Brennan out of her sunglasses. Brennan says that Hannah should be more careful in the stories she pursues because Booth would be very unhappy if she died. Hannah asks Brennan is she would back down if she were working on something important. Brennan says she wouldn’t and Hannah says that they make quite a pair.

All-in-all, this was probably the best episode of the season so far. Next week, tune in for Cougars, Slave Ships and Murder oh my!
