5. X2: X-Men United (2003)
The best superhero team gets one of the best superhero films made. Following up on his valiant effort with the first X-Men film, Bryan Singer returned to bring us this ambitious sequel, which delved further into the X-Men lore and brought us a film that not only had even more action than the previous film, but also a bigger, more interesting story.
Juggling so many characters is obviously a hard thing to do with an action movie filled with a large, recognizable cast, but Singer manages to not only add in new characters but also keep track of most of them in the process – something his successor, Brett Ratner, was unable to manage with the abysmal X-Men: The Last Stand. Even Halle Berry steps up and gives Storm more of a personality this time around. Only Cyclops is lost in the fray, but he was hardly a highlight of the team, anyway. (Poor James Marsden – Singer doesn’t treat you too well, does he?)
There are just three words to sum up the action scenes, really: Wolverine. Versus. Deathstrike. The frantic, awesome brutality of their fight scene alone is worth the price of admission, but, luckily, this movie has so much more going for it. The topical and enduring storyline is pretty much straight from the comics, so that should satisfy even the most hardcore of X-Men fans. With great action, plenty of emotion, near perfect casting, and respect to the source material, X2 endures as one of the best superhero movies yet.
