8. Watchmen (2009)
The supposedly unfilmable graphic novel, widely recognized as one of the best ever written, was finally brought to life by 300 director Zack Snyder. Many fans criticized it for the changes it made in the transition – just Google “Watchmen” and “squid” together to see what I mean – and those who were unfamiliar with the source material perhaps found themselves looking at their watches thanks to the film’s 162 minute runtime (which was expanded to 186 minutes in the director’s cut and even further expanded to 215 minutes in the “ultimate” cut), and the film performed poorly after its first week of release. However, to those who don’t mind sparing the time and accepting some artistic license, they will find themselves engrossed with the murder mystery plot and the subtext of how a world where superheroes actually exist would function.
Jackie Earl Haley and Billy Crudup stand out as the mysterious Rorschach and god-like Dr. Manhattan, respectively, though the rest of the cast hold up well on their own as supporting players.
Despite author Alan Moore’s refusal to put his name in the film’s credits, his deconstruction of superheroes remains brilliant in its filmed format. Viewers shouldn’t go in expecting wall-to-wall action, nor should they expect a traditional origin story for each hero, though there is plenty of background thanks to the flashback structure of the unfolding plot. Watchmen is more than just an ambitious, faithful adaptation of a popular comic book – it’s a revelation of what superhero films can achieve
