9. Unbreakable (2000)
M. Night Shyamalan’s realistic take on the common superhero mythos is possibly one of the most original and out-of-the-box superhero films out there. No costumes here. The villains in the movie are fairly mundane when compared to traditional super villains, but that makes them all the more menacing. Unbreakable marks the last fully realized glimpse of innovation in Shyamalan’s pockmarked career that we’ve had the privilege of seeing, giving the fight between good and evil an eerily terrifying quality thanks to the plausibility of the situations David (Bruce Willis) is placed in. Shyamalan's story feels like the beginning of a whole new world order that will eventually evolve into the traditional superhero worlds we are all familiar with, and it is a fascinating phenomenon to witness. Unbreakable is also a testament to Bruce Willis' ability to play believable everymen who happen to be complete badasses.
