2. The Incredibles (2004)
Along with Unbreakable, this one is an odd one out since it's not based on any previous source material, so the creators were able to craft their own story and mold their own characters without any worries about faithfulness or the fanboys who always freak out if there's any deviation or changes made to their sacred stories. Lucky for us, The Incredibles was made by the brilliant, creative people at Pixar, with The Simpsons alumni and The Iron Giant director Brad Bird helming Pixar’s only PG-rated film. What's also funny is that many people consider this movie to be more faithful to the spirit of the Fantastic Four than the actual Fantastic Four films themselves!
The premise is so simple yet so brilliant: a diverse family full of super-powered people trying to live ordinary lives due to the rampant destruction brought on by their battles and the perceived threat of their very presence making their heroics illegal. One couple, however, is brought back into the fray when a deranged maniac's attempts to pretend to stop the chaos he actually wrought brings them out of retirement, with a little help from their children.
The writing, music, animation style, and the voicework are easily among Pixar's best, which is saying a lot. Despite the highly stylized nature of the art, these characters feel and somehow even look just as real as any other average family, proving that animation need not attempt to emulate reality in its visuals. The voice actors do a great job, with Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter leading the pack as the elder Incredibles. Hunter’s Elastigirl, in particular, stands out as a believable loving, hardworking mother and wife, as well as a brave superhero who decided to put her near-shape-shifting abilities to use for the good of humanity – though there is some irony in that, despite her elasticity, she still frets when she catches a glimpse of her butt and thinks it's gotten too big over the years! Just one of the many fun perks of watching Pixar’s characters in action. They have also put to good use the adding of the "P" to their typical "G" rating with some of the most spectacularly exciting action sequences you could hope for in a superhero film. And all this in a genuinely family-friendly package – there is honestly something for every member of the family to enjoy here! Think about that the next time you take your kids to some other lesser quality film that tries to pander to children.
