Disney Channel Teases New Projects

Disney held a dinner last night at the restaurant/hotel combo The Standard to introduce a few of its upcoming television projects. Much of the attention was focused on the Disney XD channel, formerly Toon Disney, but a few other shows for the vanilla Disney Channel were also revealed. As previously rumored, Disney is going to be developing an animated TV series out of Tron. The dinner included a very early preview of the series, though it was also revealed that its premier would be preceded by a micro-series, targeted for the fall of 2011. The popular Phineas and Ferb series will also be given the feature film treatment with Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension, wherein the heroes will take the boys to a parallel universe to take on a more evil version of their nemesis Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Phineas and Ferb ranks as the top animated series among children ages 6-14, according to Nielsen data. Disney is also making good on its acquisition of Marvel with The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which features regulars Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and even throws in Wolverine. No Captain America, though. Also coming is a sequel to the musical hit Camp Rock, which was the Disney Channel's second most watched original movie. Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam is apparently inspired by West Side Story this time around. On the series front, Disney Channel will be getting a new live action show called Pair of Kings, about a set of fraternal twins who become heirs to the throne of an island kingdom, and the animated Motor City, which envisions a Detroit that has banned cars, forcing a group of young auto enthusiasts to indulge themselves under the cover of darkness. Seems like Disney's really pushing to get that elusive under-16 underground racing demographic.
