St. John, Kenny Chesney, and Hurricane Jeane
In September, my girlfriend and I went to beautiful St. John in the U.S Virgin Islands, where I proposed to her on a Tuesday afternoon. The next day, Hurricane Jeanne rolled over us. With the storm buffeting the area with 120 mph winds, we are isolated on this tiny island-- with no electricity in most places, no ferries out, and no staff coming over from St. Thomas to cook at the resort, etc. No food, no lights, big problems...so, we took out on an adventure around Cruz Bay to find food (and/or alcohol) and discovered that the only open spot in town serving food is an American favorite known as Woody's (best wings in USVI.)
We stopped in to find that Kenny Chesney (who had just completed his huge six month tour across the US) and his entire entourage (must have been over 100 people including band members, riggers, and accountants who he brought to St. John to celebrate the end of their great tour) have stopped in for the day at Woody's as well. And I do mean the whole day, so with nothing else to do and nowhere to go, we spent the entire afternoon and most of the evening on St. John watching and listening to the winds blow, rains pour, and Kenny Chesney and his band playing songs. Seems that Mr. Chesney is a St. John regular (owns a home or two there) and will often stop in and spend some time talking with locals and tourists around town. For us, it was a great afternoon in what could have been an otherwise dreadful situation. Mr. Chesney made this potential disaster into a memorable, almost sunny afternoon of food, music, and fun. As he says, "no shoes, no shirt, no problem"... (maybe he can add no ferries, no food, no electricity, etc. to his next song because with his assistance, it was no problem).
By the way, my girlfriend said yes (the wedding is in October), and Mr. Chesney picked up the tab for the entire bar for the whole day! It is a St. John vacation we will always remember.
