Signs

M. Night Shyamalan’s work is stylistic and clever. Unique yet an outgrowth of the multi-cultural background of this talented young man, these movies touch audiences viscerally while engaging them intellectually. What makes this film maker special is his ability to entertain while exploring deeper issues. ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Unbreakable’ and now ‘Signs’ can be enjoyed on different levels with each viewing. ‘Signs’ is a study of how people behave under stress. Influenced by ‘The Birds’ and ‘Night of the Living Dead’, Shyamalan creates a situation where outside forces threaten what is familiar and comfortable. Mel Gibson plays an ex-Episcopal priest who has lost his faith after the accidental death of his wife. He lives with his two children and his brother on a farm in Pennsylvania. The movie begins with the scream of a child and the discovery of a crop circle in their corn field. Within a few minutes we understand that this family is vulnerable -- still seeking answers for the traumatic loss of a crucial member. Heartbroken and angry, they have taken refuge in their home and in each other. As the movie progresses, they are exposed to more and more ‘signs’ that something is not right -- in their lives, in the country, in the world.

Shyamalan explores the relationship between reason and faith, coincidence and destiny. He begins with the human need for reassurance and security in the face of the unknown. Mel Gibson’s abilities as an actor are showcased in the middle of the movie, when he presents the philosophy that’s at the core of the story. Some people, he says, believe that they are alone and must deal with life’s challenges on their own. Others believe that there is someone up there watching out for them. Interestingly, the resolution of the conflict can be viewed either way, depending on the viewer’s perspective.

‘Signs’ is a well-executed project. The photography is rich and mellow. Religious symbolism permeates the set if you care to look for it. On the surface, you can enjoy it as a variation on zombies come to Pennsylvania. Or you can watch it for the puzzle quality that characterizes Shyamalan’s movies. And of course, there’s the social and philosophical commentary. Mel Gibson, Joaquim Phoenix, Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin turn in performances that are both powerful and charming.

‘Sign’s is not a perfect movie -- but it is an entertaining one.
