West Wing - The Complete First Season
One of the best shows on television, in a complete first season set.
The West Wing came onto the scene and everybody's first reaction was, "A
show about a President?!?!?" I know I thought it was a show that could never work, but after the first episode, people were hooked. The DVD set clearly shows why.
It's one thing to watch a television series week-after-week hopefully
keeping up with everything, but watching it on the boxed set, you get
addicted and, quickly addicted, at that. You fall in love with the
characters and keep up with every nuance, twist and arch.
The show's success is based, not only in the script, but also in the
acting. Script-wise, it's in-depth, very in-depth. Sure, you can watch
one episode without watching the others before it, but I wouldn't recommend
it. These characters are building and developing.
As for the acting, it's rapid-fire. It's complete Type-A personalities.
The conversations fly by quickly and if you blink for a second you missed
something. Thereby, not only can you absorb the fast-paced life of the
West Wing, but you also feel that edge-of-your-seat excitement.
The recent DVD boxed set of the first season is not chock full of extras.
It has the prerequisite commentaries and outtakes, but the key to the boxed
set is that the entire season is lined up; all 22 episodes are arranged in
the order of when they were televised. Now instead of waiting every week
to find out what happens, just watch 10 in a row on a Saturday afternoon and
10 the next Saturday, and you're nearly done.
