Goldmember
Mike Myers has struck gold again with the newest film in the Austin Powers series, "Goldmember," currently available on DVD.
Myers returns as the International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers, as well as other old favorites, Powers’ arch-nemesis Dr. Evil and the Scotsman known as Fat Bastard.
In addition to his tried and true characters, Myers takes on a new role in this film, the aptly named Goldmember, a Dutchman who is infatuated with gold. Austin must go back to the days of disco--1975 to be exact--to rescue his father Nigel Powers, played, as Austin would say, "smashingly," by Michael Caine.
Beyonce Knowles also joins the cast as Austin’s newest love interest and sexy sidekick Foxxy Cleopatra. Knowles not only makes her debut as an actress in this film, she also gets to use her singing voice, which fans may recognize from the R&B group Destiny’s Child.
When Dr. Evil and his mini evil twin, Mini Me, escape from prison to join forces with Goldmember, Foxxy and Austin must take a trip into the future to the year 2002 in order to save the world yet again.
What they don’t plan on, however, is rescuing Nigel from the evil clutches of Goldmember, who plans to take over the world.
Foxxy and Goldmember can be seen wearing authentic attire from the 1970s and shaking their groove thing in what else--roller skates. There is an original song in the film about Goldmember, performed by Knowles, and all this singing and dancing takes place in none other than Studio 69.
Some old favorites return for the third installment of Austin Powers, including Number Two (Robert Wagner), Scott (Seth Green), Basil (Michael York) and Mini-Me (Verne Troyer), who also takes on more than one mini role in "Goldmember." Also look for Fred Savage as "The Mole." His character provides more than a few hilarious scenes in the film.
"Goldmember" also has something the first two Austin Powers movies did not. Real star power. In addition to being entertained by Myers and the rest of the humorous cast, several celebrities make brief appearances in "Goldmember." These celebrity appearances are guaranteed to provide a laugh for any Austin Powers fan.
So if you’re not a fan of the Austin Powers films, this movie will probably make you one. And if you already consider yourself a fan, it will provide you with yet another laugh in an already long line of laughs by Myers and his outstanding cast of characters.
