Verizon Does Not Approve of Akon “Smacking That“
6-May-2007
Written by: Allison Zimmer
After some overt sexual dancing, Verizon cancels its partnership with rap star Akon.
Even though Verizon always seems to advertise their nearly unlimited selection of available ring tones, it seems that none of rapper Akon's songs will be available to customers.
On Friday, the company broke its ties with the rapper, whose second album, Konvicted, has sold more than 2.2 million copies, after a video was released picturing the singer dancing in explicitly sexual positions with an underaged girl at a concert in Trinidad on April 12. At Zen nightclub, Akon asked seven women to come up on the stage and dance with him. The winner, Danah Alleyne, claims that she was under the impression that she would win a trip to Africa. Instead, the rapper improvised sexual positions with her, on stage in front of an audience.
In a statement made to Fox News, Verizon said, "This week the partnership ended." The company says that they will no longer be sponsoring Gwen Stefani's tour, of which Akon was an opening act.
The 15-year-old Alleyne, who was not even supposed to be allowed into the over-18-year-old club, has repeatedly expressed embarrassment and apologies regarding the incident. "The whole hip hop thing is a guise and I don't want any part in it," she said. "Look at what I have to go through with one mistake that I made. My dad warned me every time and I didn't listen. I am sorry."
