Lewis Black ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ Tour
13-Jul-2009
Written by: Julie Ruggirello

Comedy Central’s Lewis Black leaves the audience in tears of laughter.

Pacing around the circular stage at the Capital One Bank Theatre at Westbury, in Westbury, N.Y., and commenting on his obsessive-compulsive-like behavior, John Bowman was a great opening act. According to ComedyCentral.com, Bowman has been touring with and opening for Lewis Black for several years, and is nominated for the Dick Schapp Sport Writing Emmy this year.

He ranted about New York’s state government and the terrible commute to Long Island from Manhattan, but the audience didn’t understand a reference to the “burning bridge” he was talking about (there was apparently a fire on the Throgs Neck Bridge). Bowman also spent a little while discussing the evils of marketing and the jingles that continually get stuck in your head, like the herpes medication, Valtrex, that has “living the life I want” as the background music.

After Bowman finished, Black took the stage. Known for shouting while ranting about all subjects ranging from pop culture to the White House, Black took the stage and started speaking in a quiet manner.

“I truly think it would be best if we lowered our expectations by 20 percent,” he started off the show with a jab at the failing economy, which is down by 20 percent. Later on, talking about the economy again, Black said that because the same people who got us into the economic crisis are getting us out, he hopes that “they left breadcrumbs to get us out of the woods.”

Black then became more animated as he went on to talk about all of the people he has opened up for in his life as a stand-up comic. The worst, he said was going on after country singer Vince Gill, because he was so perfect and Christian.

“ . . . and then the Jew inside me began to weep,” said Black, talking about watching Gill and his wife, Christian pop singer Amy Grant, kiss.

Black got lots of laughs throughout his performance and there was even a point in the show where an audience member howling with laughter just couldn’t control her hysterics. Several people could be seen wiping the tears from their eyes from laughing so hard.

Black also ranted about technology, Twittering, aging and even his 90-year-old parents’ love life.

The show was a huge success and the only tragic part of the evening was the traffic to get out of the parking lot.
