Queens Street Renamed After Run DMC
The New York City Council passed a bill on Tuesday that will rename the 205th Street and Hollis Avenue corner to Run-DMC JMJ Way to honor the hip-hop trio for their accomplishments in the music industry.
The "Run DMC JMJ Way" is named after Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, who was fatally shot in a recording studio in Jamaica, Queens, in October 2002. The other members who made up the group are Joseph Simmons, known as Run, and Darryl McDaniels, known as DMC.
Run DMC is widely known for dismantling music barriers with their rendition of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way.".Run DMC and Aerosmith won the Soul Train Award for Best Rap Single in 1987.
Council Member Leroy G. Comrie said that given their historic accomplishments, Run DMC is a tremendous source of pride for the Hollis community.
He told The New York Times: "It is my sincere hope that this street renaming, combined with the [Hollis Hip-Hop] museum, will help to economically revitalize this particular neighborhood as a potential tourism attraction."
The group dismantled after the murder of Mizell. Run DMC was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in April.
