The Secret Life of the American Teenager is back, and talk of sex on the show is as rampant as ever.
ABC Family premiered a new season of its hit television show, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” on Monday night (June 22).
The show, written by the creator of “7th Heaven,” follows Amy, a 16-year-old who learned she was pregnant during the series’ pilot episode and is now dealing with the stresses of juggling motherhood and high school. While she is the program’s focal point, her family, friends, and fellow high school peers all have their own issues, as well. Here is what happened during the premiere.
Amy is struggling with the challenges of being a new mom at the age of 16, yet the baby’s father, Ricky (she had sex with him at band camp one time, which led to the creation of little John), enjoys spending time with his son and pledges that he will be there for both he and Amy. Amy’s boyfriend, Ben, is jealous of all the time Ricky is spending in Amy’s room with the baby and asserts his ability to take care of Amy and the baby. He also informs Amy that he wants to start having sex, as his friends seem to not be able to get off the topic. Amy’s response? A very annoyed, “I just had a baby.”
Ben’s dad is dating again for the first time since his wife died. Ben isn’t taking this too well, as the woman his father has chosen appears to be your regular dumb blonde with an inflated chest. In one of the episode’s lightest moments, Ben is actually asked by his father if he has a condom he can use.
Amy’s mom, Ann (played by1980s movie star Molly Ringwald), learns she is pregnant, though she is quite sure it is not by Amy’s father, but rather her new boyfriend, and boss, with whom she has only been on three dates. Amy’s father, George, who was never keen on the idea of separation, bought the house next door, and other daughter Ashley wishes to move in with him.
Finally, there is Grace, the show’s once virginal Christian who is now ready to have sex with her boyfriend. She is at odds with her father, who enforces his opinion that she should wait until she is married. Grace rebels, revealing to best friend Adrian that she believes if she has sex with her boyfriend, he will never want to be with another girl again. She goes through with the act, only to learn the same night that her father’s private jet has crashed and he is dead. Grace, who was still at odds with her dad at the time he left, is absolutely devastated, as are the rest of the family and the town.
Clips from the new season demonstrate that the show promises to be as drama-filled as ever and will continue to address the central issue of sex, sex, and more sex among teens.
