Britney Spears News . . . Who Cares?
14-Jan-2009
Written by: Mic Mell
America’s fascination with the diva’s life might just be over the edge.
Britney recently told the world on her Web site, “I just took my babies to our new home and they loved it! I can't wait to move in.” And if you haven't heard, her Twitter account was recently hacked, and the hacker posted obscene (and hilarious) updates. So we continue to receive updates on Britney's life in a constant stream, and I wonder who actually cares? The latest news stories focus on Britney's desire to hire a Harvard grad to maintain her Web sites and accounts, and how she is moving. It's obvious people can count on following her bouts of drama as a hobby.
We are constantly bombarded with information about Ms. Spears, from how she lost custody of her children to her nervous breakdowns to her father's involvement in her business affairs. Here is a woman whose father has been given permanent legal stewardship over her empire. While she can definitely sing and dance, it seems Ms. Spears isn't that interested in being taken seriously as an artist, and is content as a performer.
I will be the first to admit that Spears is masterful at reinventing herself, and certainly could be the next generation's Madonna, with one startling difference. Madonna, the world's reigning queen of pop, doesn't air her dirty laundry for all of us to see. What separates the two is the elder radiates class, elegance, and an air of sophistication, while the younger seems to have a new episode of Jerry Springer in her life monthly.
While her life makes great headlines, and fodder for parody, Ms. Spears might be better served bringing professionalism to her life. Even with a new hit and perfume, it takes a heck of a lot more to be taken seriously when you make the kind of public spectacles and bad choices she does. Her former manager, Johnny Wright, was quoted recently as saying, “A comeback is not what I wish for Britney. . . . It's too soon for her to be a part of a manufactured machine that is pushing her to have to be a success.” And he may be right. She could get her life together before thrusting herself back into the public spotlight, and the grueling life on the road.
Britney Spears could be heir to the throne as pop's queen, but it will take more than just a good album and tour. Members of royalty exude charm, elegance, and are role models to people. Perhaps she will get it all together now, and turn her life around. Either way, we're sure to read about it on an almost daily basis.
