According to the Los Angeles Times, Hamilton died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from cardiac arrest. The actor was born in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1928. Hamilton ran away from home when he was a teenager and wound up living in someone’s garage while attending Oakland Technical High School, where he played football and soon became involved in acting.
His first acting role was as a baseball player in the 1950 movie, The Jackie Robinson Story. He also appeared in more than two dozens films during his acting career, including having guest spots on numerous television series. It wasn’t until he landed the role of Capt. Harold Dobey in the police drama, Starsky and Hutch, that he received wide recognition. After the ending of the show, Hamilton spent the next 20 years in the music business producing R&B and gospel records. One of the albums on which he sang and produced was titled Capt. Dobey Sings the Blues.
He is survived by his son and daughter; his two brothers, and two grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Jan. 8 at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary.
