Paula Goodspeed’s Death Difficult for Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell has dealt with controversy, but Paula Goodspeed’s death is shocking.
American Idol’s Simon Cowell has had to deal with a lot of controversies in the past eight years, but none have struck him harder than the death of Idol tryout (and personal stalker to Paula Abdul), Paula Goodspeed. Goodspeed allegedly committed suicide on Abdul’s property.
“You’re talking about a human tragedy. It hit us like an express train. It upset me a lot,” said Cowell to the press during a conference call on Wednesday.
Cowell did not remember who Goodspeed was until he saw the media show her infamous audition after the news broke a month ago. “I don’t remember to be honest with you. We’ve seen a lot of people. [But] when I saw the clips back on the news I remembered it,” said Cowell.
Cowell did not recall Abdul asking producers to ban Goodspeed from the audition room, and noted that she could have stopped the auditon at any moment. “All you’ve got to say is ‘Stop filming, I need to speak with the producers.’ That didn’t happen. But I only remember from what I saw [in news clips],” said Cowell.
Cowell notes Abdul would not have been in immediate danger. “There are a minimum of seven security guards in the room. You don’t see them, but they’re everywhere,” said Cowell.
Cowell notes that he wishes to have Britney Spears make a guest appearance on the eighth season, which airs in January. “She would be literally first on the list, as far as I’m concerned. I would love to see her mentor the contestants. If she doesn’t want to do that, but wants to perform on the show – I would welcome that at any time,” said Cowell.
Hosting two other shows have made Cowell’s life a nightmare at times, and he notes that his presence on the show is not certain, but has faith the series will prosper for years to come.
“The show could continue without me. This show could continue for another 10, 20 years to be honest with you,” said Cowell.
“It’s been the best 8 years of my life. It’s been fantastic,” Cowell concludes.
