Director Adam Shankman discusses the potential sequel to the ‘60s-set musical.
It seems Hollywood just can’t stop the beat. A sequel to the 2007 musical hit, Hairspray, is in development, according to Entertainment Weekly.com.
Director Adam Shankman reportedly received some ideas from John Waters, the original 1988 movie’s creative mastermind, and is now approaching the writers. The potential follow-up would focus on Tracy Turnblad and her friends during “the next era of music,” namely, the late ‘60s.
“That period was superpolitical. It was a time of serious change,” Shankman said. “We’re trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements.”
This comedic approach would include Tracy’s love interest, Link, getting caught up in the British Invasion, with shades of Austin Powers.
The 2007 remake grossed over $100 million during its summer run, launching the career of newcomer Nikki Blonsky. It also featured John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah and Zac Efron. The original film’s cast members, Ricki Lake and Jerry Stiller, made cameos, along with Waters.
