Disney to Go Big with IMAX
19-Nov-2008
Written by: Daniel A. Russ
In addition to their recent 3D additions to their film roster, Disney will begin releasing on IMAX as well.
Today, Disney took the final step in providing their fans with not merely 3D entertainment, but huge entertainment – they signed a deal today to release five films on IMAX giant screens.
The first film to be released in the IMAX format, A Christmas Carol, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a 3D retelling of the classic Charles Dickens tale and is due out in time for the 2009 holiday season.
“What Bob Zemeckis is attempting to do is really break new ground,” according to Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group. “Putting together this fanciful work, and then showing it on the giant screen in 3D, we think it's going to be a completely immersive experience.”
Zoradi had no comment regarding the irony of breaking new ground by redoing a story published a century and a half ago.
Disney has recently begun producing a number of films in 3D in the hopes that they'll pull more consumers into theaters, as it's an experience that cannot be had at home and on DVD. The latest 3D Disney film, Bolt, will be in theaters this weekend and is their fifth 3D film. Their most successful 3D film, The Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3-D, grossed $75 million, and Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour pulled in $65 million.
According to Zoradi, the studio plans to release at least 11 films in 3D over the next two years, including the Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie in February, Disney Pixar's film, UP, in May, and the Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer film, G-Force, in July. The studio also announced today that it would re-render its Oscar-winning animated film, Beauty and the Beast for 3D release in 2010.
