Obama: America’s First Geek President?
17-Nov-2008
Written by: Jill Marino

Newly elected Barack loves Spider-Man, “Star Trek.”

When Barack Obama was elected our 44th President, pundits all over the media talked of the youth vote coming out in masses to make sure he won. Could it be because they liked his policies, or that he’s a total fanboy?

E! reports that like past leaders of the free world, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, Obama is an avid lover of all things “geeky.” Clinton collected comics and Reagan enjoyed science fiction.

Obama has revealed in interviews his interest in things related to nerd culture and according to Harry Knowles of “Ain’t It Cool,” that’s just great.

"Just the notion that perhaps someone that may have learned a bit of ethics and morality from Gene Roddenberry's future dream for mankind, or is familiar with Spider-Man's 'with great power comes great responsibility,' well, it warms my soul," he said.

Some of Obama’s devotion to his comic heroes include posing like Superman in front of the actual Superman statue in Metropolis, Ill. in 2006 then posting the photo on his Senate Web site; he supposedly greeted Star Trek legend Leonard Nimoy with the “live long and prosper” salute at a party; has a collection of “Spider-Man” and “Conan the Barbarian” comics as per a London paper.

Maybe Spider-Man could become a new Secret Service agent? His web slinger is a great defense tactic.
