Sykes and others protest Prop. 8 in L.A.

Comedian and star of the hit show, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Wanda Sykes, officially came out of the closet yesterday. Sykes divorced her husband in 1998, and has remained silent about details regarding her personal life until after Proposition 8, banning gay marriage in California, was passed. While speaking at a gay rally in Las Vegas, Sykes revealed that she had married her now wife on October 25, mere days before the ban. She further commented on the nationwide goal of the gay community. “When my wife and I leave California, I want to have my marriage also recognized in Nevada, in Arizona, all the way to New York,” she said. “How can you stop people from loving each other?”

Sykes ended her protest with, “I am proud to be a woman,” she said. “I’m proud to be a black woman and I’m proud to be gay,” and was met with a sea of cheering and applause. In L.A. yesterday, an estimated 12,000 people showed up to protest Prop. 8. Among the celebrity speakers in L.A. were Ricki Lake, Marisa Jaret Winokur, Ugly Betty’s Alec Mappa, Lucy Lawless and Matt Lucas of comedy series Little Britain.
