Actor Robert Pattinson Overwhelmed by Twilight Success
10-Nov-2008
Written by: Katelyn Reilly

Despite hard work to achieve the role of Edward Cullen in the new Twilight film, and experiencing a few strange encounters with fans, Robert Pattinson is excited by the fame that has come his way.

As fame grows for British actor Robert Pattinson, so do the strange requests he receives from fans.

E! Online reports the actor, set to star as vampire Edward Cullen in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novel, Twilight, had a strange encounter with a fan while at an Apple store in New York.

The 7-year-old fan spotted the actor at the store and asked if he would take a photo with her. Pattinson courteously obliged to her request, but then the girl whispered, “Can you bite me?”

Twilight isn't set to hit theaters until November 21 and already fans are completely taken by the film.

Although completely thankful for the role, Pattinson wasn't always so sure the part was for him. The first line in the character breakdown read, “Edward is the ideal perfect man,” which greatly delayed him from auditioning for five months. Then after gaining the courage to finally audition, his first task was to take his shirt off in front of director Catherine Hardwicke. Edward's “ideal” features were supposed to include having six-pack abs, which Pattinson did not have at the time.

After finally landing the role, the first thing Pattinson decided to do was get into shape. His goal was to lose as much fat as possible to make himself appear alien-like, believing it would work perfect for his vampire role. However, after months of working out he was told his shirtless scenes were eliminated from the film because he had gone too far with his weight loss. The actor lost 30 pounds and Hardwicke believed his body now looked too “weird.” Hardwicke finally gave in and allowed Pattinson to shoot a few shirtless scenes, but by the time the scenes were shot he had gained weight back and the scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

Despite overcoming his nerves and putting his body through a lot, Pattinson is still caught up in all the fame that has recently come his way. The actor exclaimed, “It doesn't seem very real at all. I just go to these different cities and people start screaming.”
