TV Wrap Up: SNL Weekend Update Thursday
10-Oct-2008
Written by: Mike Harwood
SNL goes prime time.
During an election season, there is no show that quite puts the politicians in their place like the infamous SNL. And as oxymoronical as it sounds, Saturday Night Live has now temporarily jumped to Thursdays for continuing coverage of the race to the White House.
Yesterday brought the 34-year sketch comedy show to prime time with its unapologetic satire of politics and headlines. The show began with a guest return of Chris Parnell doing a spot-on impersonation of Tom Brokaw moderating the second Presidential Debate. There was even a surprise guest star, Cub fan, Bill Murray.
The spoof debate was hilarious, poking fun at the town hall format and the moderator’s strict time restrictions. It also featured Hammond as McCain wandering around aimlessly during Obama’s response, oftentimes directly in front of the camera.
After the commercial the show returned with an extended, two part Weekend Update. I’m not sure if they stepped it up for prime time, but this Weekend Update seemed a lot meatier and funnier than the several weeks' previous. Even the generally B- Seth Meyers gave an exceptional performance throughout. But how can you go wrong with a faux Hall & Oates bit?
Overall, this half hour edition of SNL is everything the show should always be. It was sharp, witty and downright hilarious throughout. But perhaps after November 4, this trend will all change.
