“The Dark Knight” getting closer to total set by “Titanic.”
The Dark Knight officially became the second highest grossing movie in Hollywood history, topping the $500 million mark.
According to estimates from its distributor, Warner Brothers, the film reached $502.4 million on Sunday. The Dark Knight reached the milestone in slightly over six weeks. Titanic, the only other film to reach that number, did so in more than three months. Titanic went on to gross more than $600 million.
The head of distribution at Warner Brothers, Dan Fellman, says he does not expect Knight to finish near the total set by Titanic. Fellman predicts it will finish around $530 million, but could go as high as $550 million if business stays strong.
While the total set by The Dark Knight is rivaling that of Titanic, factoring in the admission price difference between Titanic’s release in 1997 and today, The Dark Knight would need to gross approximately $900 million to match the number of tickets sold by Titanic.
