Zuma and Nesta Are Girls’ Names
23-Aug-2008
Written by: Katharine Westfall

Baby Rossdale’s name gets more and more embarassing.

There have been some weird baby names in Hollywood in recent years, but Zuma Nesta Rock, the son of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, may top the list. The couple has yet to disclose publicly what inspired their baby’s name. According to the New York Times, Zuma drums up several allusions. First, Zuma is a beach in Malibu where Rossdale reportedly experienced a defining moment that triggered his successful music career. Second, Neil Diamond’s 1975 album was entitled Zuma, as was, third, a 2004 hit video game. As for the rest of the name, the Times noted that Nesta was Bob Marley’s original name, and Rock may refer to Stefani’s No Doubt album, Rock Steady. Marley and his reggae music have had a significant influence on Stefani’s own creativity, and she also named her first son Kingston in homage to reggae’s homeland, Jamaica. In an interview with the Associated Press, baby name expert Jennifer Moss reported that a survey on her Web site, Babynames.com, showed that baby Rossdale’s name appealed to only 1 percent of people. Another 50 percent said they actually hated it. Maryanna Korwits, another expert, told the AP that Zuma and Nesta have historically been used as female names, just adding to the potential for embarrassment that the boy faces as he grows older.
