Spider Named After Stephen Colbert
2-Aug-2008

The Colbert Report host will be honored in true eight-legged fashion.
A California spider has been named after TV personality Stephen Colbert.
The Colbert Report host received the honor after displaying complete and utter disapproval when he learned that musician Neil Young would have a spider named after him, reported the Daily News. He was clearly just jealous.
Jason Bond, an East Carolina University biologist, was responsible for the naming of Myrmekiaphila Neilyoungi, and thanks to him, arachnids have been named after people ranging from Nelson Mandela to Bond’s own wife. According to the Daily News, Bond heard Colbert’s on-air rant and consequently contacted the host to talk spiders.
The spider is one of a new species, discovered last year along the west coast. Appropriately named Aptostichus Stephencolberti, the species is actually directly related to a spider named after Angelina Jolie.
When it was made official, Colbert had a little message for his friend Neil, reported the Daily News. "Guess what, Neil? What goes around, lays eggs around. Because that same biologist, Jason Bond, is naming a spider after me," Colbert gloated Wednesday. "And all I had to do was shamelessly beg on national television." He added, "Watch out, Neil. When they say my spider eats its young, they are talking about you!"
Bond will appear on The Colbert Report Wednesday, where he will announce the naming to the nation.
