“Extreme Home Makeover” House in Danger of Foreclosure

An unpaid $450,000 loan may leave a family homeless.
A home that was made over by ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover faces foreclosure, the Associated Press reports.
In 2005, ABC’s hit television show, Extreme Home Makeover, came to Georgia with more than 1,800 volunteers to help demolish and rebuild a deserving family’s run-down home. Now, three years later, the home that resulted from the reality show’s efforts is in danger of being foreclosed upon.
The Harper family, who received the renovation, used the two-story mini-mansion as collateral for a $450,000 loan. Unable to pay back the loan, which the family received for a failed construction business, the house is set to go up for auction at the Clayton County Courthouse on August 5.
Built in 2005, the house, with its four bedrooms, solarium, four fireplaces, music room, and three-car garage, was the largest house that the reality show had yet built at the time. Materials and labor were donated for the construction of the home and Atlanta-based Beazer Homes USA’s employees and company partners also raised $250,000 in contributions for the family. This included scholarships for the family’s three children and a home maintenance fund.
The family members in danger of losing their home are not the only people upset by this sad news, however. The hundreds of volunteers who gave their time and energy to the construction process are not thrilled at the outcome either.
Lake City, Georgia Mayor Willie Oswalt, who helped with the renovation, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that, “It's aggravating. It just makes you mad. You do that much work, and they just squander it.”
ABC claims that they advise each family to consult with a financial planner after receiving their new house.
