Kanye West Television Project to Honor War Veterans
25-Jul-2008
Written by: Jason Townsend-Rogers

The rapper teams up with MTV to produce a television show that will recognize the efforts of U.S. troops.

“George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

With that singular quote, rapper Kanye West made his opinions on the state of our federal government clear to the general public.

Said in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Kanye’s words were accurate considering the president’s inattention to the predominately African-American population in New Orleans, where the damage was the most severe. West will soon be returning to the airwaves; however, instead of disparaging the president, the rapper will use his influence to honor Iraq war veterans.

According to AOL News.com, West’s new show, titled Choose or Lose & Kanye West Presents: Homecoming, will air on July 28 at 10 p.m. and highlight the lives of three soldiers returning from the Iraq conflict. The rapper will then surprise each soldier with an unexpected visit to their home, where they will engage in a frank discussion of the war’s effect on their lives.

West’s appearance at these homes will not be merely for show. The rapper also plans to assist these veterans in paying off their debt, finding a job and aiding with school bills. These acts will serve as a gift from MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation, named in honor of the rapper’s late mother.

According to MTV's Executive Vice President of News, Dave Sirulnick, these veterans’ stories are “important and worth telling.” He continued by mentioning that West “felt that these stories should be heard and we should show them the same interest by giving something back.”

West’s actions go a long way towards recognizing the sacrifices made by these soldiers, especially at a time when their efforts are needed more than ever.
