Car Rentals
8-Jul-2008
Written by: Jane Squires

Cash is worthless.

You can have $450-600 in your checking account and try to rent a car to no use, unless you have a lot of money available on a credit card. We are and have been becoming a world of plastic for some time now. My daughter had a Mastercard-backed debit card with money in the bank. She reserved a rental car in Indiana to pick up in Missouri. Everything was arranged. But when she went to pick up the car, even with a Corporation Discount proving she worked for a worldwide company, she could not rent a rental car.

She could have walked to the ATM Machine and withdrew the money and handed them the cash, but cash was worthless. Also my husband (her Dad) offered to put $100 cash on it and have them take the rest off of her boyfriend's credit card.

He had a credit card at the same bank he has a checking account. He transferred money from his checking account onto his credit card and his own bank would not vouch for him or give consent for them to use his credit card, even if he drove. His Mother went down to the bank to put $200 on his credit card and was told it would be three days before it could be considered, and she has an account at that bank and a credit card at that bank. I would say that bank won't have their business long.

But this is not new. We were reminded of when my daughter (same one) was small and her Grandpa and Grandma came to Arizona to rent a rental car. They flew in and could not rent one with cash. They did not have a credit card and he had to put $1,500 down in cash for less than a $200 rental car.

What happened to the days when a handshake and a man's word meant something?

To solve this solution we had to let my daughter and her boyfriend take our SUV back with her stuff. Her sister and her boyfriend went along so they could drive our car back to us. Her car did not have the air conditioner working. So we swapped cars for two days.

This drive is 12 hours one way. Now the oldest daughter had her boyfriend to share the driving with her and they battled storms for 12 hours to get here for 3 days. My youngest was enjoying the trip until she hit Missouri and storms on roads she did not know. Her boyfriend cannot drive to help her because he has fluid on his knees and had to cancel two doctor's appointments just to go with her.

At this point I have no use whatsoever to ever rent a rental car.
