Daughter wanted to end the arranged marriage; father felt he was maintaining his family’s honor by killing her.
A tragic story is being reported by ABC News about a 56-year-old father of Pakistani descent, named Chaudhry Rashid, who is being accused of strangling his daughter to death.
Rashid was arrested early Sunday morning in response to an emergency phone call and is slated to be arraigned today. Reportedly, a verbal dispute over an arranged marriage resulted in Rashid taking serious offense to his daughter's desire of obtaining a divorce from her husband.
Rashid’s daughter, 25-year-old Sandeela Kanwal, had not spoken to or seen her husband in months and did not want to be with him any longer.
The authorities are accusing her father of murder by strangulation, speculating that he potentially utilized an iron as well as a necklace discovered in the upstairs bedroom in which her body was found.
ABC News is reporting that the domestic disturbance call was phoned-in by Rashid’s 49-year-old wife, who escaped as the attack was occurring. Kanwal had not spoken to her father in over two months as a result of the evident friction from her desire to divorce her husband, according to the police report.
