Camp Rock vs. High School Musical
25-Jun-2008
Written by: Ivana Cheong

Musical teen stories seem to be the key for Disney.

Disney’s newest musical sensation, Camp Rock, was a huge success with its 4-day premiere weekend. According to data from Nielsen Media Research, the movie, starring the Jonas Brothers and Demi Levato, drew in an averaged crowd of 8.9 million viewers. According to E! Online, Disney confirmed Camp Rock’s weekend drew in a total of 21 million viewers.

That’s more than the High School Musical premiere back in 2006, with 7.7 million viewers who tuned in to the first airing. However, HSM2 took over numbers when its premiere averaged to 17.2 million viewers, making it the biggest non-sports/non-newscast program on cable.

Also, E! wrote that last week’s 33rd rebroadcast of High School Musical had as many people watching as the two-day old rerun of Camp Rock.

All these data make it hard to gauge Camp Rock’s success compared to the High School Musical franchise. On its own, Camp Rock did well enough for Disney to have planned the sequel, which reportedly will start shooting in 2009. But then again, the Jonas Brothers are way bigger stars than any of HSM’s cast members when the movies premiered.

E! Online wrote: “More than a year and a half after its January 2006 debut, HSM could still draw 5 million viewers, more than most new cable shows. At its two-year anniversary, it attracted 4.5 million.”

With the third installment of HSM hitting the big screen soon, Camp Rock has a lot to live up to. Fans will have to wait for the sequel and see if the “Jo Bros” and Demi Levato can beat Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
