Martha Stewart Banned in Britain
20-Jun-2008
Written by: Ivana Cheong

Past fraud activities might be responsible for the homemaking queen’s visa refusal.

Celebrity lifestyle guru Martha Stewart has been denied a visa and an entry to the UK because of her past criminal record.

The Daily Telegraph says that Stewart was planning to visit Britain for a few days to discuss various business matters and to speak at the Royal Academy.

Charles Koppelman, the chairman of Martha Stewart Omnimedia, said in a statement: "Martha loves England; the country and English culture are near and dear to her heart. She has engagements with English companies and business leaders and hopes this can be resolved so that she will be able to visit soon."

The UK Border Agency, who banned Stewart, refused to comment further, USA Today wrote, saying they will not publicly divulge info of individual cases.

"We continue to oppose the entry to the UK of individuals where we believe their presence in the United Kingdom is not conducive to the public good or where they have been found guilty of serious criminal offences abroad," a spokesman for the agency said, according to Reuters UK.

New York Daily News stated that a British government official admitted that the decision was, "a bit silly," given some of the "other people allowed into the country."

Martha Stewart was convicted in 2001 of insider trading of her ImClone stocks before it plummeted. She was sentenced to five months of jail time and house arrest.
