Dennis Farina may face up to 2-1/2 years in jail for charges brought by the City Attorney, after the County D.A.'s office dropped their felony charge.
Dennis Farina has been charged with three misdemeanor counts by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office, stemming from his original felony booking in May, when police found the gun he was carrying through airport security was not registered.
The actor is best known for playing New York Police Detective Joe Fontana in Law & Order. He may face up to 2˝ years in jail as well as $3,000 in fines if he is convicted of the three misdemeanor counts, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney's office told Reuters. His bail is set at $35,000.
Farina was taken into custody on May 11 at Los Angeles International Airport after LAX screeners found an unregistered .22 caliber automatic pistol in his briefcase, according to E! News. He was due to be arraigned on Thursday for the charges: one count of carrying a weapon in a secured area holding a fine of $1,000 and six months in jail; a second count of possession of a concealed weapon; and the third charge is possession of a loaded weapon in a public place. The last two hold a $1,000 fine a piece as well as up to one year in jail, according to Reuters.
He told police that he brought the gun with him on a drive from Arizona to Los Angeles and forgot he had it when he arrived for his scheduled flight home to Chicago. Police said that he was “apologetic and cooperative.” The actor has released a statement saying, “It was my own stupidity to find myself in this embarrassing situation,” reported Reuters.
