Emily the Strange Movie to Be Made
30-May-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

The goth teen, Emily the Strange, is to have a movie made about her.

Emily the Strange, the teenage symbol of anti-conformity is to be headed to the big screen soon. Dark Horse Comics, the publisher of the tiny goth, will make a film talking about her upbringing, reported Reuters.

Rob Regar, skateboarder, created little Emily and put her on many products including skateboard decks, stickers, and T-shirts in Santa Cruz, California during the early 1990s. The design took off and Regar’s company, Comic Debris, went on to become a multimillion-dollar business in fashion, toys, school supplies and accessories, said Reuters.

Of Emily, Mike Richardson, the producer of the film, said, “Emily herself is a very appealing little girl, there’s an edge to her. There is something very alluring to her image; people see it and respond to it immediately.” The two are to be looking for a filmmaker who “gets the character.” This choice will more than likely also decide what format will do best for the film: live-action, animation, or a combination of the two, said Reuters.

The film is to offer a back story to Emily and how she came to be with her 4 cats as well as having 13 new characters with names such as Sabbath, Nee-Chee, Miles and Mystery. Regar told Reuters of Emily, “In their life, everybody has, especially in the teenage years, looked to find themselves and felt like they don’t fit in. Emily presents that person in a positive light. She prefers to be different and to look at things in her own way. She’s a great role model for people to think for themselves.”
