The Jackie Chan/Jet Li action flick, “The Forbidden Kingdom,” was a resounding success at the box office this weekend.
Jackie Chan has struck gold again. Chan's latest action movie, The Forbidden Kingdom, ruled over the box office this weekend. Also starring martial arts star Jet Li, the action fantasy teams the two popular actors up for the first time. The Forbidden Kingdom ended up earning $20.9 million, according to estimates by the studio. The Lionsgate movie was expected to do well, but estimates had been below what the film actually took in. Judd Apatow's comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, took second place at the box office, taking in just over $17 million. Al Pacino's newest film, 88 Minutes, came in at number four, earning a respectable $6.8 million. Prom Night, a favorite from last week, came in at number 3, earning just over $9 million.
Notably, Kingdom's opening was one of the highest for a martial arts film. According to E!, about 90 percent of those who went to see The Forbidden Kingdom went as fans of Chan and/or Li. This weekend's box office intake was almost 10 percent higher than at this point last year.
