Florida teenagers were arrested for videotaping a severe beating of a 16-year-old girl.
YouTube is an online gathering place for people who want to share homemade videos with the world. The point is to get as many people to view your video as possible. But eight teenagers in Lakeland, Fla. seemed to have abused the idea of the popularity of violence in the media.
These teenagers were arrested on April 2 for beating a 16-year-old girl in an “animalistic attack” in order to film it and post it on the video-sharing Web site, according to the Associated Press.
The girl, Victoria Lindsay, was attacked by six girls on March 30 when she arrived at a friend’s house. The arrest report said that one girl struck her in the head several times, then slammed her head into a wall, giving her a concussion. Lindsay’s father alleged that the teens intended to post the video on YouTube.
According to the county sheriff, eight teenagers altogether were involved. After the attack, three of them drove Lindsay to another location, where they threatened another beating if she contacted police.
All suspects have been charged with battery and false imprisonment, while the three that took Lindsay to the second location have also been charged with felony kidnapping.
As of today, seven of the suspects remain in juvenile detention, and one male having been charged as an adult was released on bail.
