Iavarone's Prime View
15-Feb-2008
Written by: TheCelebrityCafe.com Staff

Iavarone's Prime View isn't just the name of a restaurant in Port Washington. It's an apt description of the place and the food.

Prime View sits just across the street from Manhasset Bay and Mill Pond and has a gorgeous view of both waterfronts. The century-old two-story building has been home to so many restaurants we've lost count, but Iavarone's Prime View is one we hope that will stay.

The Caputo family and the Iavarone brothers (yes, the same Iavarone brothers who own the exquisite Italian specialty food stores across Long Island and Queens) are the new owners of this historic property. Under the skillful hand of chef George Levendis, formerly of the Blue Honu in Huntington, the Prime View offers up more than just a great scenery. The food alone is worth a trip.

We couldn't decide what appetizers to order because there were a variety of original and interesting choices. We decided to try an old standby, fried calamari, and one of their signature ones- the "esca roll". The fried calamari were cooked to perfection and were accompanied by three tasty dipping sauces, a garlic aioli, traditional marinara sauce and a basil pesto. The "esca-roll" a take on cabbage rolls made of escarole leaves wrapped around sausage, raisins, and shitake mushrooms, was a big hit at our table.

The entrees at Prime View were just as amazing as the appetizers. Hearty eaters will want the bourbon-espresso glazed pork ribs so tender they just fall off the bone. Or try the delicate beef short ribs braised in merlot. The sesame crusted tuna accompanied by Napa slaw and a saki-soy reduction was not only plated beautifully but was one of the best pieces of sushi grade tuna I've ever had.

Even after stuffing ourselves full we couldn't say no to the dessert menu. We were intrigued by the simplistically named "coffee and doughnuts." There was nothing simple to it. Out came a plate of hot zeppole accompanied by a
cup of "cappuccino" which really was vanilla semifreddo and espresso.

If you're looking for a place for a special dinner for two, or just love eating fabulous food, Iavarone's Prime View is well worth the drive to Port Washington.
