NYC Unveils New Condom Wrapper and Raunchy Ads
15-Feb-2008
Written by: Sam Belkin
NYC has redesigned the official condom after only a year to keep things fresh.
New York City has undergone some renovations lately, and I’m not talking about the controversial moving of the fountain in Washington Square Park.
NYC has redesigned their official condom wrapper, which once sported the letters NYC CONDOM in colorful circles that resembled the symbols the MTA uses to represent subway lines. The new design, by product and industrial designer Yves Behar, features the same letters in a different arrangement. “NYC” is in black against three grey interlocking circles, with “CONDOM” underneath, each letter a different color against the black wrapper.
The new ad campaign for the new design is featured in both English and Spanish. The English-language ad bears the slogan “Get Some,” while the Spanish version says “Pontelo,” which translates to “Put it on.”
The occasion for the new condom wrapper is yesterday’s Valentine’s Day. Last year, at the same time, the Department of Health and Mental Hygeine presented the official condom for the first time.
So why a new design after only a year?
According to the New York Times, assistant commissioner for H.I.V. prevention and control at the department, Dr. M. Monica Sweeney, said, “we want to keep it fresh. Make it more accessible, more exciting, to stay safe.” She also explained that the slogan “Get Some” didn’t translate into a relevant Spanish idiom, thus the reason for the Spanish version.
