Battle of the New Sex and the Citys
7-Feb-2008
Written by: Mallory Groff

Two new shows with an oddly familiar theme.

Let the competition begin. Two Sex and the City-esque shows from two Sex and the City creators are about to go at it, as the second of the shows premieres tonight. The first show is Darren Star’s (producer of Sex and the City) Cashmere Mafia. It stars Lucy Liu, Bonnie Somerville, Miranda Otto and Frances O’Connor, as the four of them struggle to have personal lives and work lives in a man’s world. It airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC, and premiered last month.

The second show is Candace Bushnell’s (author of the book that inspired Sex and the City and this show) Lipstick Jungle, starring Brooke Shields, Kim Raver, and Lindsay Price as, you guessed it, a trio of women trying to make it in a man’s world. It premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on NBC.

According to Newsweek, Darren Star came up with Cashmere Mafia after he lost a bid to the rights of the book, Lipstick Jungle. However, both of these shows seem a bit similar to, oh I don’t know, Sex and the City.

Reviews of both shows do not speak highly for either of them, although Newsweek prefers Cashmere Mafia. It seems that as a viewer, one may be better off catching a Sex and the City rerun on cable.
