26-Jan-2008
Written by: Corinne Regan
The Washington Post reports the Federal Communications Commission announced a proposed a $1.43 million fine against ABC Television.
This fine is directed at a February 2003 episode of “NYPD Blue,” which features the scene of a woman taking off her robe in a bathroom, showing partial nudity including her buttocks and the side of one breast.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the FCC is holding accountable ABC’s 52 stations in the Mountain and Central Standard Time zones, which aired the episode before 10 p.m. The East and West time zones were not subject to the fine because they aired the episode after 10 p.m. The FCC prohibits any kind of indecency aired between the times of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. when children are most likely to be watching television.
The Walt Disney Company, owner of ABC said it will appeal the ruling to the FCC.
This is the second-largest indecency fine against a television broadcaster in history, according to the Washington Post.
