Chlamydia Hits All-Time High

STD’s on the Rise Last Year
Federal health officials said Tuesday that over 1 million cases of Chlamydia were reported in America last year, the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, reports the Associated Press.
The reason for the increase could be better and more intensive screening measures, according to officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Gonorrhea and syphilis are on the rise as well, including a new strain of gonorrhea, which is resistant to common antibiotics. Gonorrhea sees a rise after hitting a record low in 2004, and congenital syphilis rose for the first time in 15 years.
Of all these three bacterial diseases, Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease. The over 1 million cases reported broke the single-year record for any STD, which had previously been 1,013,436 cases of gonorrhea in 1978.
In 75% of cases, Chlamydia shows no symptoms. If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to infertility. However, it is easily treated if caught early.
