Six out of 10 Paid $0 for New Radiohead Download

New Radiohead Download Free For Most Buyers

Last month, Radiohead announced it would allow fans to set the price for their new album, available for download on their official website.

While there were many takers, 62% or 6 out of 10 fans worldwide, paid nothing for it. According to digital research firm ComScore Inc., the 38% who did pay, spent an average of $6 each. An average of 1.2 million people downloaded the album.

Though the band has not revealed how much it has made of their new release, "In Rainbows" so far, Billboard Magazine estimates the band could eventually profit between $3.2 million to $4.7 million.

While the band might generate a tidy profit, they could have benefited from selling their CD the traditional way and seen sales of nearly $12 million. But they win the war against record companies in one way, they get to keep almost all of the revenue generated through digital sales of "In Rainbows." Normally, the band would have had to pay most of their earnings to their record label to pay for promotion, studio and administrative costs.
