Superbowl Half Time Show

Written by: Erica Medina

Jackson and Timberlake shock Superbowl viewers

Looks like the Britney Spears can finally get some rest from the publicity of her recent slew of stunts, such as her on-stage kiss to Madonna at the MTV Music Awards and her 55-hour marriage to her hometown hunk, Jason Alexander. Now, Spears' ex-boyfriend is feeling the backlash of a publicity stunt gone wrong.

During the MTV-produced half-time show for the Super Bowl, Janet Jackson performed along with Nelly, P. Diddy and Kid Rock. Jackson opened the performance with her hit song, "All For You." After short performances from P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, the camera panned back to Jackson, who sang one of her first hits, "Rhythm Nation." As MTV had promised earlier in the week, a surprise guest appeared on the stage, who was none other than Justin Timberlake. Timberlake sang his song, "Rock Your Body," and danced provocatively with Jackson to lyrics such as, "I like the way you move, so go ahead girl, just do that ass shaking thing you do." After a few minutes of bumping and grinding, Jackson and Timberlake stood next to each other for the end of the performance. As Timberlake sang the last line of his song, "Better have you naked by the end of this song," he reached over and pulled off a piece of Jackson's leather costume, giving the 72,000 fans at Reliant Stadium and the estimated 1.3 million viewers a view of Jackson's right breast, which was, conveniently, partially covered by a metal decoration. Cameras immediately cut away from the shot and the network did not mention the incident on air.

A CBS spokeswoman said, "CBS deeply regretted" the incident. MTV claimed the incident had not been a part of rehearsals the week before and issued a statement declaring, "The tearing of Janet Jackson's costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance." "MTV regrets this incident occurred and we apologize to anyone who was offended by it." Federal Communications Commission Chief, Michael Powell, said he was "outraged" at the display. "Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration. Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt. Our nation's children, parents and citizens deserve better," said Powell in an issued statement. Powell has ordered the FCC to investigate the broadcast, which could result in hefty fines for CBS. Timberlake claimed he did not intend to undress Jackson, blaming the mistake on a "costume malfunction." Although Jackson did not issue a statement, a spokesperson for her says she also apologizes to anyone she may have offended.

A webpage headline blaring that, "Janet Jackson Got Nasty at the MTV-Produced Super Bowl Half-Time Show," summed it up saying, "Jaws across the country hit the carpet at exactly the same time. You know what we're talking about ... Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and a kinky finale that rocked the Super Bowl to its core."
